Yes, I CAN!

You can, we can, ICAN – meet the folks behind the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. What started in a Melbourne coffee shop has grown into a Nobel Peace Prize-winning collective determined to achieve global disarmament.

“We have to remember that these weapons are new,” founding ICAN member Dave Sweeney tells us. “They are only 80 years old, and 80 years is enough. We can’t get used to this. We, as a species, created this existential threat and we can wind it back.”

More highlights in this edition:

    • “It’s one thing to house people, and another to support them to be able to reintegrate.” Hear from Rocky, a StreetCare advocate and Big Issue Classroom speaker, who shares her story of homelessness and the daily challenges that come with it.
    • Perth’s Tim Minchin wasn’t too cool at school, but he sure did learn how to play a tune. In his Letter to My Younger Self, he tells us that making people laugh was what he was born to do.
    • The Himalayan foothills are home to the largest honeybees in the world; with ladders made of bamboo, the Gurung people scale the colossal cliff faces to harvest the sweet stuff. In The Big Picture, photographer Andrew Newey takes us into the hive.
    • It’s Huey’s Kitchen, we’re just eating in it! In Tastes Like Home, Iain “Huey” Hewitson gives us a taste of his upbringing in New Zealand with his Braised Lamb Shanks. Read the full recipe here.
