Even though I’ve only been at Big Issue for 11 months, I was able to buy a car with my savings, which is great. I’d like to keep working for another couple of years at least. The future scares you sometimes, but looking ahead, I just want to be happy, really.

Banana Milk Flan
I've always had a soft spot for banana‑flavoured treats, especially banana milk. There’s something about its sweet, slightly artificial taste that feels deeply nostalgic to me. It instantly brings me back to childhood – those simpler moments when a cold bottle of banana milk felt like the best thing in the world.

I think The Big Issue is great because it gives people a work history instead of having no work history at all. That experience can help people move into other careers and jobs in the future. I think that’s really important.

Selling The Big Issue, being outside, talking to different people and doing something like this is good for my mental health. It’s much better than staying home every day, which is not good, you know?

Even though I’ve only been with The Big Issue a few months, it feels exciting to be part of the 30th anniversary. The Big Issue has the other benefit of directly helping the people who sell it. It’s unique that way. I think people like being able to buy something that matters.

I can’t believe The Big Issue is 30. That’s half my life I’ve spent doing this; I turn 60 next year. I don’t do the magazine anymore, just The Big Issue Classroom. I would like to retire sometime in the future. But, once you’ve done The Big Issue, it’s in your system – you can’t get rid of it.

Fried Crispy Eggplant (Batanjan Makli)
"This eggplant is one of those recipes that instantly takes me back to our family floor gatherings. It’s simple, humble and made from ingredients many people overlook, yet it proves that the most memorable meals don’t come from restaurants but from a home filled with love, fresh produce and people gathered around the same table…or, in our case, the same newspaper on the floor.
