A Place to Call Home

All Queensland grandmother Tracey wants is a safe place to live. After losing her home, she set up camp where she could be close to vital services and her family. That was until the local council sent police to move her, and others, on – be it by force or fine.

Housing is a human right, but in Australia the ever-growing waitlists for affordable housing are being met with policies that are effectively criminalising homelessness. In this edition, we ask if there’s a different solution to the housing crisis.

More highlights in this edition:

    • Author Michelle de Kretser is delighted to meet her readers on the pages of her books (and in the street). In her Letter to My Younger Self, she talks of reading, writing and living life with eyes wide open.
    • Following 2022’s Talk to Me, brothers Danny and Michael Philippou are putting Australian horror on the map. They talk to us about their new film Bring Her Back and about being taken seriously on the set this time around.
    • For Rutger Bregman, doing good for the world is a sign of a life well lived. In his latest book, Moral Ambition, he’s putting his money where his mouth is – and encouraging others to do the same.
    • On their debut album YEARN IV, MC Teether and producer Kuya Neil are putting the focus on collaboration and community – “you really need that in order to push the culture a bit further”.
    • In Ozzities we get squiggly with it, as we remember the gentle magic of TV puppet Mr Squiggle.
    • Cook Jade Miles makes the most of the autumn harvest with a Thyme, Mushroom and Onion Galette in Tastes Like Home. Read the full recipe here.
