“When I got the call to do the movie, I was driving my car and I immediately shouted ‘yes!’” says everybody’s favourite everyman Hugh Jackman. “When you get butterflies over a project you just know it’s something you have to pursue.”

This month, he hangs up his civvies and steps out of superhero retirement for big-budget buddy-hero flick Deadpool & Wolverine – and it’s got our Hugh feeling reflective.

Celebrating National Volunteers Week with The Big Issue

This week from 15-21 May 2023, National Volunteer Week is the largest annual celebration of volunteering in Australia. The event acknowledges the generous contributions and vital support that volunteers provide to their communities.

At The Big Issue we are proud to celebrate the incredible staff from our partner organisations who have volunteered their time, expertise and goodwill to The Big Issue.

The Big Issue runs volunteering opportunities across our programs and social enterprises, including The Big Issue magazine, Community Street Soccer Program and Women’s Workforce.

Each year hundreds of volunteers help to cook vendors breakfast at our fortnightly magazine launch, participate in a friendly game of soccer, help our Workforce to pack magazines, or support vendors to sell magazines on the street with The Big Issue Challenge.

Our volunteering programs provide meaningful opportunities for volunteers to engage with the issue of homelessness and disadvantage and make a tangible difference – and for our program participants to meet new people and form connections in their community.

It’s more important than ever to recognise and celebrate the volunteers who help make The Big Issue community a better place. A big thank you to all our volunteers!
